Q. What's the difference between a good and a great cover letter?
A. An interview!
On the page before this you'll see an example cover letter sent to me by Jon, a client. He asked me to review it for him. Here is the cover letter I gave back to him, which won him a job interview.
FAO Mrs Langham
Dear Mrs Langham,
I'm very excited about the Service Sales Consultant opportunity you've recently advertised with CBS Personnel.
I'm passionate about IT and the real benefits that a properly thought through IT solution can bring to a business, large or small and I'd like to bring my enthusiasm and experience to your Company to help you achieve your aims and mine.
I have 7 years service sales and support experience, 3 of which have been in the IT industry. During that time I've developed my consultancy skills to a level that's been recognized as beyond my peers at ABC Company, my current employer.
As well as having the experience you're looking for, I'm fully qualified. I am close to finishing my Masters Degree in Business Administration which I have completed in my own time. This gives you an indication of my level of interest and commitment.
I would love the opportunity to meet with you personally to talk about the contribution I can make to your Company.
Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any questions, please call me.
I look forward to speaking with you soon.
Can you see that this version of Jon's covering letter ticked all the job criteria listed in the job advert? It's short, clear, relevant, correct and compelling -- everything you want in a good cover letter.
If this sample cover letter meets your needs why not use my cover letter services too? Jon asked me to review his cover letter and feels sure the changes resulted in him being asked to a job interview. We can do the same for you.
And if you'd like to see a second sample cover letter, before and after my help, there's one here.
There's also an example cover letter I wrote from scratch, which you can find here.
