Let Us Help Create A Resume
For You - A Winning One!

At the start of our Resumes And CVs Guide we explained how important it is to plan your resume or CV. We've already covered Step 1 of resume preparation. Here's Step 2 of our help create a resume advice.

Help Create A Resume Step 2 -- Review Your Work History

Start Step 2 when you can be certain of some peace and quiet.

Think over your work history. As you do:

  • List your main responsibilities for each role
  • List the skills you acquired -- both technical and non-technical
  • List your qualities that have helped you be successful
  • List specific achievements and their results and include small and large achievements, whether achieved on your own or as part of a team

If, like many applicants, you're struggling with achievements, think of instances where:

- You were rewarded or recognized in same way for your effort or your results

- You were particularly satisfied with something you did or felt especially competent because of what you delivered

Think of it this way. There are two basic types of achievement. The first is a one-off achievement where you have made a difference within a particular project or activity. The second type of achievement is ongoing, where continually using your experience or skills leads to a positive result.

As you read our help create a resume advice, bear in mind that all employers want examples of achievements.

But you don't need to have gained recognition from others. How you felt about a particular outcome is what's important. And it doesn't have to be a major achievement. Many small successes still count, even though they're often overlooked.

At this point, don't worry about length, format or spelling -- these can be addressed later. All you want at this stage is to generate content ideas to help create a resume or CV.

When you've finished writing, read through your notes and begin to edit them. To help you do this well follow these guidelines:

  • Put your responsibilities for each job in order of relevance as they relate to the role you're applying for
  • Give your best achievements special emphasis. By 'best' we mean achievements which were either very hard or provided most benefit to your employer. If they are directly relevant to the position you're applying for, all the better
  • For all achievements, explain, with examples if possible, how these benefited you and your employer. Start with your best achievements
  • If you have highlighted key strengths or skills, write down a specific example of how you've used each to improve yourself or your Company
  • Do the same for your qualities
  • Focus more on your most recent jobs -- employers are more interested in recent performance. Be more selective with details and examples for jobs you've held in the past
  • If you've used technical terms or jargon, re-phase them unless they are clearly understood terms in your industry
  • Double-check everything for accuracy, including dates, numbers and names

It's worth doing this for 2 reasons:

  1. It will help create a resume or CV that is relevant and compelling
  2. It will prepare you for your interview and give the foundation for good interview answers
